Seat system with shock absorber

Profile

What was needed: plain bearings for a seating system with shock absorber

Requirements: corrosion resistance, forces up to 5g, maintenance-free use

Industry: boat and ship building

Success for the customer: maintenance-free and durable plain bearings without reworking, which can come into contact with salt water without any problems.

Problem:

The plain bearings used till now often had to be re-machined in order to maintain the required tolerances. Installation time and costs increased accordingly.

Solution:

Along with igus, a custom-made solution was found that did not require any post-processing. Installation times and costs could be reduced, resulting in lower final prices for end customers.

Boat with shock absorbing seats

High seating comfort despite swells

The company Professional Components has developed a mechanism for seats in boats that protect the user from severe spinal damage and extreme fatigue. At high speeds, waves cause shocks that are transmitted directly to the boat and the people in it.

The system uses a shock absorber in conjunction with igus plain bearings made of iglidur J4 material. Shocks are optimally cushioned and driving comfort is increased. You can therefore navigate the sea even under extreme conditions and with chronic back pain.

Faster installation times and no reworking

Previously, plain bearings used came from another manufacturer which were milled from bar stock. However it was difficult to maintain the required tolerances. Some of the plain bearings had to be re-milled to ensure the correct fit. In collaboration with igus, an individual solution was found for the seating system. Now the company Professional Components uses injection-moulded plain bearings made of iglidur J4 material. This is cost-effective and ideal for large production quantities. Since the bearings no longer have to be re-milled and their installation has been simplified, the final costs for customers have been reduced. Professional Components is pleased with the increased safety and performance of its product.

The seating system comes into contact with seawater, so corrosion resistance and low water absorption are critical to the selection of components. The system can be subjected to shocks of up to 5g, which is why optimum load distribution via the plain bearings is important. Reducing rotational resistance is also critical to allow adequate energy transfer. The system must be maintenance-free, as most users do not have tools on board to carry out repairs. Another decisive factor for Professional Components was that the plain bearings are easy to install during the manufacturing process, reducing installation costs.
