Offshore robots

Inspection, cleaning & repair in demanding environments

Norwegian company Remotion is a manufacturer of robotic systems for the offshore oil and gas industry. Using magnetic technology, the robots work both below and above the waterline, performing dangerous operations such as inspecting, cleaning or repairing structures. When the surfaces of ships and offshore platforms are cleaned, large amounts of harmful substances are usually released into the oceans. This is avoided by the solution from Remotion: the material residues are collected directly using vacuum suction and fed to a filter system. For this system to work smoothly, all robot components must be able to withstand high water pressure, salt water and contamination from abrasive particles. Find out on this page what other challenges this order brought with it and how igus® was able to solve them with the drive technology parts.

Problem

The robots of the company Remotion work both below and above the waterline using patented magnetic technology. They carry out difficult and dangerous operations, e.g. inspections, offshore hull cleaning or the repair of surface structures underwater or in the spray zone. The components have to withstand extremely harsh conditions:
  • Water pressure up to 10 bar
  • Long-term immersion in corrosive salt water
  • Significant hydrodynamic forces in the spray zone
  • Contamination by abrasive particles
  • Limited maintenance options
To address these conditions, the company looked for products that had low weight and low total moisture absorption. In addition, the products should be extremely wear-resistant and guarantee strong performance at low speeds.

Solution

With the help of the igus® components, Remotion was able to solve the numerous problems. All components, e.g. the toothed belt axis, the linear rail or the bearing parts impressed with their low maintenance requirements and low weight.

The ZLW drives are a compact solution with lightweight and low maintenance requirements for use in wet and dry conditions. They are used as a tool platform and actuator.

The drylin® W products are also used in the company's tool constructions. They are compact, lightweight, easy to maintain and are also ideal for the underwater environment.

igidur X plain bearings are used in many pivot points and rotating parts. These have saved a lot of volume and weight in underwater robots, while the maintenance requirements are marginal compared to rolling bearing solutions. They also work very well in the underwater environment.
