With drylin® lead screw technology

Lead screw drives are machine elements that convert rotary movement into linear motion (transmission threads). igus® high helix thread and trapezoidal lead screws are available in three different lead screw materials (stainless steel, steel, and aluminium) and in combination with more than seven different lead screw nut materials. Friction-optimised iglidur materials allow quick, simple configuration and ordering of applications that require no lubrication or maintenance.
The asymmetrical threads of the dryspin technology developed by us increase service life, and the flat flank angle increases efficiency. The geometry of the lead screw nut suitable for the threaded rod is variable, even in the standard item. There are geometries for everything from cylindrical designs to designs with flanges or spanner flats to clearance-reducing lead screw nuts, such as zero-backlash, low-clearance, and anti-backlash lead screw nuts.

Metal lead screw systems require regular lubrication. Without suitable lubrication, they start to corrode or deform in running operation in a short time. This causes the application to fail if it is not properly maintained.

The lubrication-free, maintenance-free drylin lead screw systems are the perfect alternative to conventional metal lead screw drives. All drylin lead screw nuts are made of high-performance iglidur polymers. The tribologically optimised plastics are characterised by their special properties: their special composition makes them extremely wear-resistant, robust, and self-lubricating. Special solid lubricants ensure that self-lubricating lead screw nuts work smoothly.

Self-lubrication reduces maintenance to a minimum. The incorporated solid lubricants eliminate the need for regular re-lubrication.  Dry operation gives particles such as dust and fibre much less purchase. In dirty environments, this greatly increases service life over that of conventional, lubricated materials.

Under the influence of moisture, metal lead screw nuts quickly begin to corrode. This means that the surface of such nuts is destroyed by electrochemical reactions arising from the environment. Corrosion occurs in most applications involving metallic lead screw nuts. This causes the lead screw systems to lose important specifications, such as strength.

drylin lead screw technology, on the other hand, is entirely corrosion-free, thanks to our high-performance iglidur polymers. All drylin lead screw nuts are made of plastics that are tribologically optimised. The additional lead screws are available in stainless steel 1.4031, stainless steel 1.4021, C15 steel AISI 1015, and aluminium EN AQ 6082. This ensures absolute freedom from corrosion throughout the entire application service life.

Lead screw nut materials such as iglidur A180 und iglidur J are suitable for applications in humid environments and for wet applications. What is characteristic of these materials is that the absorb very little moisture.
But moist environments are not the only places where drylin lead screw technology proves its worth. In dirty or hot applications, plastic lead screw nuts are the optimum alternative to conventional metal ball screws.

Dispensing lubrication allows low-friction dry operation. The advantage is that dust and fibre are much less likely to stick to the lead screw system. Service life increases, especially in dirty environments.

Lead screw nuts that are made of maintenance-free iglidur® materials and are tribologically optimised can be used in temperature ranges between -20°C and +90°C. In addition, there are versions that withstand extreme temperatures of +150°C. Please note: the temperature-induced expansion also has an effect on the clearance of the nut as well as the maximum load capacity. When the application is exposed to temperature extremes, we recommend testing the suitability of the lead screw nuts by practical tests.

Lightweight construction is becoming increasingly important for many users in a variety of industries. drylin lead screw technology offers innovative solutions for such applications as, for  example, replacing heavy recirculating ball nuts with lightweight plastic lead screw nuts. Functional integration is extremely important during such replacement. This usually clearly defines user tasks: more function and less weight in a shorter and shorter time.
drylin lead screw technology can be used to achieve all these goals. The plastic lead screw nuts are not only lightweight, but also entirely maintenance-free and require no lubrication. Identical dimensions allow smooth replacement. In order to make a precise prediction about expected service life, our lead screw drive expert calculates lead screw system service life, online and free of charge. The dryspin® technology

High efficiency and low wear

The patented dryspin high helix thread technology was developed by igus in 2015 and offers numerous advantages compared to conventional high helix threads. Due to the flat thread angle, they convert the exerted power efficiently into a translational movement. With properties and shapes matching the plastic nut and lead screw, dryspin thereby provides an even longer service life and more efficiency for high helix threads. Due to the rounded tooth geometry, the contact area between lead screw and nut is reduced, and the lead systems operate quietly and without vibration under load.

The larger spaces between the individual dryspin threads result in a higher share (factor 1.3) of tribologically optimised polymer in the threads. More wear-resistant material and higher levels of efficiency are crucial for a service life that is up to five times longer compared to conventional high helix threads.

Wear test: new measurement Ds10x3

dryspin® technology beats competitors and trapezoidal thread

Wear is an important aspect of parts in moving applications. Wear-resistant plastics such as our high-performance iglidur polymers are the solution for minimising wear and increasing the parts' service life . Tribological properties and harmonised geometries suit drylin lead screw technology perfectly to all application areas in which good coefficients of friction and minimised wear are important.  The largest test laboratory in the industry takes up 3,800 m², and igus performs research and development and an extensive series of experiments there.

dryspin technology is also tested regarding its tribological properties in a variety of test series so as to minimise wear and maintenance intervals:

The evaluation of the wear test for the product with the dimensions 10x3 made of stainless steel showed that our dryspin® thread Ds10x3 can achieve a wear rate up to 25% lower, a service life up to 25% longer and greater efficiency compared to the competition and the trapezoidal thread Tr10x3 .
