Especially in extreme environments, such as offshore facilities, rust can still, over the years, force operators to replace or intensively maintain their motorised drums. Energy chains operate differently. High-performance polymer variants are resistant to chemicals, saltwater, and UV radiation. The result is that, in some applications, energy chains can be operated for almost ten years with hardly any maintenance.

In principle, however, the low wear properties of the chains, which are made from tribologically optimised polymers, and their outstanding cable protection ensure a high service life and minimise maintenance requirements and downtime.
The disadvantage of busbar systems is that they are difficult to clean and their maintenance is complex. The shoes installed on the collector arms need to be regularly inspected and replaced when they wear out. The system must be powered down to facilitate this replacement. Energy chain systems, on the other hand, are almost maintenance-free, can run for years without problems, and require only basic visual inspections to ensure the system is in good working order.
