Where did my career begin?
Iain Mackenzie's progression story
Before igus® I spent almost 4 years working in retail while searching for the perfect job for me. My igus journey first began when I joined the drylin® team in the Factory, which involved completing a variety of customer orders incorporating bearings, aluminium rails and shaft and their respective carriage systems where required. This naturally involved building up a level of familiarity with our products and the assembly requirements of various specifications.

Where did my career begin?
In 2001 I left college and didn’t really know what I wanted to do. An opportunity was presented to me to work for igus® and after an interview I landed a job working in the factory preparing orders and managing stock for the dry-tech department. The role gave me a great basis to understand the igus® product range and work with igus® systems.

Future Talent
Once apprentices have completed their courses, they can move onto the igus Graduate Program or may have the opportunity to become an igus employee. The Apprentice Program is to level 3 (or A level) and the Graduate Program is to degree level. These two programs have different support systems and benefits attached to them.

I soon moved department as my transferable skill base from Retail Management was recognised, so within a year I was supporting igus with all the recruitment requirements. Over time, this role became more people-orientated and I naturally progressed into running the HR department (i-People). igus supported me and recommended that I go through the official CIPD route. Over a 3-year period I completed levels 3 and 5, which were sponsored through igus. These qualifications have supported my knowledge and confidence within the HR field.” – Leila

The Northants Engineering Training Partnership (NETP) is a partnership of engineering companies in the Northants region that have linked-up with the University of Northampton and we are lucky enough to be one of those companies. The partnership exists to create a pool of industry ready engineers of the highest calibre http://www.netpengineering.co.uk/“Being part of the NETP was beneficial as it enabled me to start an internship with igus UK and gain deep theoretical knowledge as well as hands-on experience in the automation and robotics industry. After graduating, I successfully gained a position as an Automation Engineer, specifying and supporting numerous clients with their automation requirements. The work environment in igus UK is warm and supportive allowing me to grow and progress as a professional. I would highly recommend aspiring engineers to join the NETP, which will help them stay competitive as well as increase their confidence and experience..” – Angelos

Sustainability
What is igus® UK doing to become a more sustainable company?SURE Group
We would not be where we are today without our strong team of workers, which is why we prioritise creating a happy and healthy environment for all to work in.
We have accomplished this by creating a health, safety and wellbeing team, led by those who have a passion for wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, charity events and improving the safety culture. Everyone at igus has the opportunity to voice their opinions and be a part of every event we run, which include various businesses and charities across Northamptonshire.
Since creating this group, we have:
Started our very own igus Fitness Bootcamp led by a colleague, to give everyone the opportunity to keep fit and get their hearts racing.
Raised over £3,500 for the Hope Charity after a brave team abseiled down the Northampton Lift Tower in September 2023.
Began an Art Class and created a Book Club to help inspire creativity.
We plan to raise more money with a Sky Diving event in 2025 and increase our involvement with local, smaller charities.
SURE statement
SURE (Safety Unit and Risk Elimination) is a new business team led collaboratively, where each member takes it in turn to take the wheel. Its members are based across multiple departments from both the factory and the office, and its remit is to make our workplace and local area a more sustainable and safer environment, creating a culture that all staff will thrive in. This will be achieved by improving the health & safety, and wellbeing of our igus employees.
