Hybrid cable for the energy chain

What are hybrid cables?

A hybrid cable is known as one-cable technology. Their use makes it possible to save both money and time. Up to now, the servo motor and the converter have always been connected to two cables: A servo cable was used for the power supply. For the data re-transmission, an encoder cable is provided to inform the control system, for example, the speed and position of the motor. Energy supply and data transmission run on a single cable, a so-called hybrid cable. This eliminates the need for cabling with a separate encoder cable for the encoder.

Woodworking machine tools

Hybrid cables in woodworking

A major manufacturer of woodworking machines converted its drive technology to the new Beckhoff hybrid technology, capitalising on the advantages of the more compact design. The challenge was with the cables, which in their machines have to perform a great many movements with very tight radii. This is where igus entered the race with a challenging service life test. It was challenging because the requirement was to also measure the Hiperface DSL bus data transmission over its use. That is why we worked very closely with our customer to achieve reliable results for both of us. Feel free to send us a query when you need to test cable solution durability.

Single-cable solutions in drive technology

Single-cable solutions in drive technology Hybrid technology has been a hot topic for several years. Machine designers would obviously like to reduce the number of cables that carries both energy to the motor and movement data, such as direction of rotation, speed and acceleration. Ideally designers would like one cable...
In addition to saving installation space on the cable and connector, the customer could potentially also eliminates the cost of processing a second cable and of the additional material.

We have taken all these advantages into consideration when designing and producing the CF220.UL.H (PVC jacket) and CF280.UL.H (PUR jacket) cable series. Here, the electrical wire/cross-section combination is constantly being expanded to be fully compatible with drives from various manufacturers, such as Beckhoff, SEW, and Siemens. We use the digit after the letter "H" in the part number to mark this affiliation to the manufacturer's requirement. The advantage for our customers is that, if the article number is identical from the "H" onwards, they can choose freely between PVC and PUR jackets without putting themselves at electrical risk. This can result in great savings.

The topic of drive cables and their manfucaturers is currently being discussed so read what we have to say at igus® in the below blog.
